Brings classic American diner flavors to Truckee, offering a warm, inviting space for great food and lasting memories.

The Birth of Jax At The Tracks

In 1992, Robert Carey, a successful San Francisco restaurant entrepreneur, had a vision for a place where people in Truckee, California could enjoy great food at affordable prices. Having a second home in the Sierra Nevada town, Carey realized there was a gap in the market for a classic American diner. Inspired by an article he read in the Wall Street Journal about saving historic diners, Carey decided to bring the charm of an old-school diner to Truckee.

Carey’s journey led him to the Birmingham Grille, a 1948 Kullman diner in Philadelphia. After much research and effort, the diner was delivered to Truckee and a meticulous restoration began. With his son Andy by his side, the 1.2-million-dollar renovation transformed the diner into a timeless piece of American history. Finally, on December 6, 1995, Andy’s Truckee Diner opened its doors, becoming a beloved spot in the town.

In an exciting turn of events, Robert Carey met Bud Haley, a Bay Area executive who had recently moved to Tahoe. With a shared passion for food and community, Haley took over the diner and made it his mission to offer more than just great food—he wanted to create a welcoming space for everyone. With an enthusiastic team of culinary professionals, they continued the diner’s legacy while introducing new touches, making it a place for both locals and visitors to enjoy.
